PREGNANCY

I have severe morning sickness.

While many women experience morning sickness (especially in the first trimester), some women will experience a debilitating form of morning sickness that causes significant interference with their everyday lives and may need additional medical care. Hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) causes severe nausea and vomiting that may lead to dehydration and/or result in the loss of more than 5% of pre-pregnancy body weight. HG may require hospitalization and treatment with intravenous (IV) fluids, medications, and (in rare cases) a feeding tube. HG requires a medical diagnosis. If you are struggling with severe nausea and sickness during your pregnancy, see your healthcare provider right away to discuss management of your condition. For more support, you can also seek out the following organizations.

No matter your diagnosis, it’s important to talk to your healthcare provider if you are suffering physically or mentally during and/or after your pregnancy. Your complaints and concerns are valid. Even if you experience a milder form of morning sickness, you can talk to your healthcare provider about strategies and potentially medications to help you overcome morning sickness.
