PREGNANCY

I’m pregnant.

You've taken an at home pregnancy test-- or 5. The results have come back "positive." It's a lot to take in, and you might need some time to process the news and talk to a trusted loved one (a partner, friend, or family member). Next, you'll want to consider your prenatal care and options for pregnancy support.

  1. You'll want to schedule your first prenatal care visit-- which will typically be set for after your 8th week of pregnancy. Ask about the appointment's duration to make sure that you plan enough time for your visit and arrange any childcare needs. Prepare a list of questions and concerns that you may have about pregnancy, prenatal care, your OBGYN's policies, etc. before your appointment.

  2. If you are concerned about affording prenatal care, search your local area for federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) or rural health centers (RHCs). These centers provide a wide range of women’s and family healthcare services. Services are provided regardless of your insurance coverage or your ability to pay for services. Check for local options at the HRSA Data Warehouse (or Get Your Care), and ask about services and sliding scale fees.

  3. If you are unsure about your options, resources, and support, you may benefit from a visit to a local pregnancy center. Pregnancy centers often offer one-on-one counseling where you can learn your options, discuss insurance, get an ultrasound (if available), and learn about available support for your unique needs (e.g. education, support groups, state assistance, local referrals).
